Seasonal Letter 06. Orange in the Coastal Dunes
Orange jewels decorating the coastal dunes
shining at the sunset beach at the North Sea.
The cold west wind with rain clouds.
Telling us that the autumn is in the air.
From ancient times, Japanese people have been enjoying the seasonal beauty and following the rythm of nature through a cup of tea. This little series of Toridori's seasonal letter was born to bring — a little spoonful of — seasonal beauty and nature's rythm into our life.
At the end of August, I start to feel Autumn in the air. The day is now getting shorter, and the hot summer air becomes cool autumn breeze.
For our sixth seasonal letter, I decided to feature autumn at the coastal dunes of the North Sea coasts. There is one plant which marks the beginning of autumn in this place: the orange fruits of sea buckthorn (or duindoorn in Dutch). Like I wrote in the letter, the color contrast of this fruit with the sea background is stunning beautiful.
Now for many of us living at the present time, the long line of tall apartment buildings and white beach huts is the typical view of the North Sea. But in the old days, the beautiful coastal dunes used to cover the entire coastline.
Maybe that's why I somehow feel a strong feeling of nostalgia, although I did not know this view before.

TORIDORI SEASONAL LETTER 06.
Orange in the Coastal Dunes
Toridoriの季節便り
海辺の砂丘を飾るオレンジ色
2025 August 26 - 2025 October 14
Hi, friends! How are you doing?
To add a spoonful of seasonality in your cup, I am writing a small seasonal letter every month.
My sixth letter features the Belgium's beautiful natural herritage at the North Sea: the coastal dunes.
Sea buckthorn (Duindoorn in Dutch) is one of the native plants in this rather rare biome, which used to cover the entire coastal line of the Belgian North Sea. During the late August to October, this plant decorates the dunes with its beautiful orange fruits.
I saw the coastal dunes for the first time when I came to Belgium, and it was around this time of the year. Since then, I have a special affection to this beautiful contrast of the blue sea, white sand, and orange duindoorn at the North Sea.
