Seasonal Letter 04. Japanese Star Festival / Tanabata
July 7th, the day when a magpie flies to be a bridge
over the Milkey Way for two lovers in the night sky.
Celebrate their joyful moment,
and make a wish upon stars.
From ancient times, Japanese people have been enjoying the seasonal beauty and following the rythm of nature through a cup of tea. This little series of Toridori's seasonal letter was born to bring — a little spoonful of — seasonal beauty and nature's rythm into our life.
For our forth letter, I thought I should not forget another famous Japanese tradition: "Tanabata (七夕)", the star festival.
This, probably the most known Japanese festival in the world, originates from an ancient Chinese mithology about the two artisan couples in the sky. The mithology became a ritual to pray for improvements in artisanal techniques, and when this ritual crossed the sea over 1000 years ago, it became connected with water —
the important element of spiritual purification.
The details of this festival have changed over time, but the essential part remains the same today. This is the day to purify your spirits, and to make a wish for a better self — with a help of the stars.

TORIDORI SEASONAL LETTER 04.
Tanabata: Japanese star festival
七夕
2025 July 7 - 10
Hi, friends! How are you doing?
To add a spoonful of seasonality in your tea cup, I am writing a small seasonal letter every month. This time, it is a special edition featuring "Tanabata (七夕)" — July 7, the day of making your wishes upon stars.
This special day is related to the old mithology about the lovers in the night sky — Orihime (織姫, representing the star Vega) and Hikoboshi (彦星, representing the star Altair). They are separated by the great river Amanogawa (天の川, representing the Milkey way), but on July 7, they can cross the bridge to see each other.
In Japan, this is the day make a wish upon a star by writing on colorful paper strips called "tanzaku (短冊)" and hanging them on bamboos. Bamboos are one of the holy plants in Japanese tradition, symbolizing life.
May your wishes come true!
Erina
